I love you, irony!
Apr. 2nd, 2007 10:23 amOkay, so this happened a few days ago, but I really need to comment on it because it is too hilarious and sad.
So, a few days ago ESPN televised a Major League Baseball "Equal Rights Game" (or possibly the "Civil Rights Game")which was played somewhere in the south (I forget, really, but it was a city that had significant ties to the civil rights movement). And the commentators spent all this time talking about Jackie Robinson and Martin Luther King Jr. and How Far We've Come. And there may have been a musical montage of black and white photographs of the Realities of Racial Segregation.
A little heavy-handed perhaps, but you know, a nice thought, I suppose.
Except, one of the two teams invited to play in this game? The Cleveland Indians. Yes, one of two teams in the league with a racially insensitive name and easily the team with the most racially offensive mascot: A stupidly grinning redface character named Chief Wahoo.
I didn't know whether to cry or laugh. Way to go, ESPN and MLB. Way to go. Because as we ALL know, racial equality only refers to blacks and whites.
